Dolphins Win Home Opener Over Yeshiva

Griffin leads the way with 22 points

their home opener over Yeshiva 90-73 on Thursday night. The win gives the Dolphins two straight Skyline Conference wins.

The Dolphins led from the outset on Thursday, holding a 46-34 lead at halftime and a lead as large as 24 in the first half. Griffin finished the opening frame with nine points as the Mount shot 47.1-percent from the field and 66.7-percent from behind the three-point line. Mocanu finished the half with eight points and was 3-4 from the field and 2-2 from long range.

Griffin finished with a career-high 22 points on 10-15 shooting on the night. She also pulled down seven rebounds against Yeshiva, including four on the offensive side. Mocanu came off the bench and also finished with a career-high 18 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor in 15 minutes of action. She was also a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.

Kerry O'Connor (Bethpage, NY) finished a solid evening with 11 points, two assists and a steal in her second start of the season. Ashley Ruiz (Carmel, NY) and Joelle Denotaris (Verona, NJ) also turned in solid games of the bench with eight points apiece. Ruiz also chipped in with four assists.

Overall in the contest, Mount Saint Vincent shot 40.8-percent from the field and converted 53.3-percent of its three point shots. The Dolphins also held a commanding 54-36 edge on the glass, including 23-8 on the offensive side. That advantage led to a 21-11 edge in second chance points and a 28-16 advantage in points in the paint.

Yeshiva was led by Avigail Varnai who posted a game-high 28 points on 11-15 shooting. Varnai knocked down four triples in the game, pulled down seven rebounds and posted three steals. Elana Kastzl also had a strong shooting night, knocking down five three-pointers on her way to 15 points.

The win moves Mount Saint Vincent's overall record to 3-2 on the season and its Skyline mark to a perfect 2-0. Up next for the Dolphins is a road tilt at nine-time defending Skyline Tournament Champion Mount Saint Mary on December 6. Tip-Off with the Blue Knights is set for 1:00 p.m.
