Dolphins’ Winning Streak Ends With Heartbreaking Triple Overtime Loss At Farmingdale St.

Farmingdale St. ending their season-high four game winning streak. Sophomore Jen Mocanu (Middletown, N.J.) scored a team-high 23 points and senior Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, N.Y.) handed out her 500th career assist.

Mount Saint Vincent held a 37-32 lead after the opening half and extended that lead to 15 points twice in the second half following three pointers from Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Ciara Clarke (Warwick, N.Y.) with 15 minutes left to play in regulation time.

Following the Clarke three pointer Farmingdale St. ran off a 16-2 run over a 4:10 stretch to get within a point after a pair of Kimberly Blakney free-throws with 10:22 left in the second half. The Dolphins would get the lead back up to six points, but the Rams would score six straight to tie the score at 60 with just over seven minutes showing on the clock.

The Dolphins would not lose the lead the remainder of the half and would again pull in front by six with 52 seconds left after a Mocanu triple. The Rams would not give in and scored seven of the final eight points in regulation, including two free-throws from Blakney with eight seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Blakney scored 18 of her game-high 41 points in the second half and the Rams outscored the Dolphins 14-7 at the free throw line in the stanza, including 6-7 from Blakney, to send the game into extra time. 

Both teams scored seven points in the first frame with the Dolphins holding a three point lead twice in the final 1:21. A Blakney triple with 35 ticks left in the first overtime period knotted the score at 79 and forced the second extra period.

The two teams would each score 10 points in the second period of overtime with the Dolphins losing the lead for the first time since the 4:37 mark of the first half after a Tiffara Steward jumper with 1:37 left in the period. Mocanu would hit 1-2 from the free-throw line following that to tie the score at 89 and send the game into its fifth frame.

Farmingdale St. would pull in front by three points with 3:26 left in the third overtime, before Kara McNish (Hawthorne, N.J.) hit a free-throw and Mocanu converted a lay in to tie the score at 94 with just over two minutes to play.

The key bucket in the game turned out to be a three point field goal from Farmingdale's Jeanette Zubizarreta with 1:21 left that pushed the Rams in front 97-94. Jill Brady (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) responded with a bucket for the Dolphins to pull them to within a point, but that would be the last scoring of the contest for the Mount.

Mocanu finished 9-22 from the floor for the Mount and turned in a double-double with 11 rebounds. She also handed out four assists and picked up four steals. It is the third time in the Mount's last five games she has scored at least 20 points.

Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) also had a strong outing for the Dolphins, posting 19 points and a team-high 15 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and the 33rd of her career. She was 6-10 from the floor in the game and 7-9 from the free-throw line.

Koerner posted 17 points on the night, knocking down four three pointers for the Mount. Clarke reached double-figures for the first time this season with 11 tallies on 4-9 shooting, including three treys.

Rounding out the five in double-figures for the Mount was Percodani who finished with 10 points and 11 assists for her first double-double of the season. The 11 assists are one off her career-high and her first helper of the night was the 500th of her career. She also finished with two steals in a career-high 50 minutes of playing time.

Blakney finished the contest 13-31 from the floor and 27 of her 41 points came in the second half and the overtime periods. She hit seven threes for the Rams and it is the second time in the last four meetings she has scored at least 40 points against the Dolphins. She also grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, handed out four assists and swiped seven steals.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 8-5 overall on the season and to 5-2 in Skyline Conference action. The Dolphins will look to rebound on Thursday when they travel to Purchase. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
