(Riverdale, NY) – Mount Saint Vincent senior
Meagan Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of Victory) notched her fourth double-double of the 2005-06 season, and all four Dolphin seniors combined for 50 points and 32 rebounds, but the Dolphins struggle with one of their worst shooting performances of the 2005-06 season and fell to Centenary, 72-64 in the Skyline Conference play-in game at Mount Saint Vincent. With the loss during the Mount's third game in three days, the Dolphins finish the 2005-06 season with an 8-17 record.
The early going made it seem like the Dolphins would enjoy a rout as Fitzpatrick and company opened a 16-7 lead six minutes into the game. However, a 13-0 run by the Cyclones put the Cyclones ahead, 20-16. Mount Saint Vincent battled back to take the lead, 21-20 with 5:04 left in the first half, but a 14-4 Centenary run to close the opening stanza gave Centenary a 34-25 lead. The Mount battled back once again to start the second half and trailed 34-31 with 18:18 left in the game, but a 20-1 Cyclone run put the game out of reach.
While Mount Saint Vincent forced 26 Cyclone turnovers while turning the ball over only 11 times, they were unable to take advantage thanks to a terrible shooting night. The Dolphins shot less than 20% from the floor for much of the game, and ultimately converted only 23 of their season-high 88 field goal attempts. The Mount actually converted six of their final eight field goal attempts to raise their shooting percentage to 26%, while Centenary spent most of the game shooting more than 45%, and finished the game with a 38% success rate from the floor.
Fitzpatrick finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds and broke the 800 point mark for her career. Fellow senior Laura Bucci (Irvington, NY/Our Lady of Victory) added a team-high 16 points and added five assists, and seniors Andrea DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) and Lauren DeRosa (Hawthorne, NY/Westlake HS) added 14 points and 16 rebounds, respectively. The Mount also received an outstanding effort from sophomore Kaitlin Burud (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook HS), who scored 12 points, and added six rebounds and a game-high five steals.
The game marks the end of the road for one of the greatest senior classes in Mount Saint Vincent history as Fitzpatrick, DiNizo, DeRosa, and Bucci played on the same court for the final time after exactly 100 games together. The group combined for 3,679 points, 1,755 rebounds, 798 assists, and 591 steals.
