Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Yeshiva In Skyline Opener

The decision was never in question on Tuesday as the Dolphins score the first 15 points of the contest, with Mocanu scoring seven in that stretch. Yeshiva did not get on the board until the 16:32 mark and never got closer then nine points.

Mount Saint Vincent shot a blistering 53.7-percent from the floor in the first half on its way to a 53-36 lead at the intermission. The Mount also knocked in six three pointers, including two each from Ashley Ruiz (Carmel, N.Y.) and Ciara Clarke (Warwick, N.Y.). The Dolphins' defense also had a strong opening twenty minutes, holding the Maccabees to just over 30-percent shooting. Yeshiva stayed within 17 at the break by knocking down four threes and converting 12 of its 14 free throws in the half.

The Dolphins opened the second half in similar fashion to the first, as they went on a 17-2 run to open the stanza and extended their lead to 32 with just under 17 minutes left to play in regulation time. The Mount Saint Vincent lead in the second half never slipped below 29 points and expanded to a game-high 37 on a Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, N.Y.) jumper with just over two minutes to play.

Mount Saint Vincent converted six more three pointers in the second half, with Koerner finishing with three in the period. The Dolphins slipped to just over 41-percent shooting in the second half and finished the game 41-87 (47.1-percent) from the floor. The Dolphins finished the game converting 37.5-percent (12-32) of its three point field goals, but went just 8-11 from the free throw line.

Mocanu led all scorers in the game with 24 points in just 16 minutes of action. She matched her career-high for field goals made with 11 as she finished 11-13 from the floor overall and 2-2 from behind the arc. The sophomore guard also grabbed six rebounds, handed out two assists and swiped two steals.

Ruiz came off the bench to score a season-high 15 points for the Mount, as she converted all six of her free throw attempts. Koerner finished 5-9 from the field overall on her way to 13 points and also chipped in with two assists and two rebounds. Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) finished a strong all around effort with eight points, eight boards, three assists and two blocked shots for the Dolphins.

Yeshiva, who shot 36.8-percent from the field, was led by Jacklyn Ramras' 20 points on 7-13 shooting. Shir Fuchs and Avigail Varnai each posted 14 points for the Maccabees.

The win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 3-1 overall on the season and to 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Dolphins is their home opener with Skyline Preseason Favorite Mount Saint Mary. Tip-off on Thursday night with the Blue Knights at the Sharp Center is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Post Game Notes: Tuesday was the 104th straight game Mount Saint Vincent converted a three-point field goal…The game was the first time the Dolphins scored 100 points in a contest since a 102-98 win over Farmingdale St. on February 21, 2009…It was the first time this season Courtney Heesemann did not finish with double-figure rebounds…The Mount Saint Vincent bench outscored Yeshiva's 42-8.
