Dolphins open up big halftime lead en route to first Skyline Conference win of 2005-06

(Riverdale, NY) – It took only four games for Head Coach Ed Ryder to make his impact felt as the new leader of the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team. In front of an excited home crowd for opening day 2005-06, senior Andrea DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) scored a season-high 22 points, and fellow senior Meagan Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of Victory) added seven points and a career-high 15 rebounds as the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team defeated Skyline Conference foe, Centenary College, for the first time in three years, 59-45. The win was the second of the 2005-06 season for the Mount and first in the Skyline Conference.

The Dolphins (2-2, 1-0 Skyline Conference) opened up a 29-17 lead at halftime thanks to DiNizo, who scored 14 first half points. Fitzpatrick and the Mount defense took over in the second half as the Dolphins held Centenary to only 15 field goals for the game. The Cyclones (2-3, 0-1 Skyline Conference) shot only 19.5% from the floor (15 for 77), and Fitzpatrick grabbed 10 of her rebounds in the second half. Mount Saint Vincent, on the other hand, shot 34.5% from the floor, including an outstanding 68% from the free throw line (19 for 28).

The Dolphins were also led by freshman Drew Gomes (Thomaston, CT/Thomaston HS), who had eight points, nine rebounds, and three assists.

For Centenary, Ayana Way (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) had a team high 14 points, while senior Lenaya Price (Jersey City, NJ/Ferris High) added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Up next for Mount Saint Vincent is a huge Tuesday night encounter as the host St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) in a rematch of the 2005 Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Championship Game. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
