Clarkson tops Women's Basketball, 52-48, during Consolation Round of Hunter College Tip-off Tournament

Fitzpatrick: 13 points; Furious late comeback falls short during final seconds

(New York, NY) – Three Dolphins scored in double figures, and the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team engaged in a furious second-half comeback, but the Dolphins ultimately fell to Clarkson, 52-48 during the Consolation Game of the Hunter College Tip-off Tournament. With the loss, the Mount falls to 0-2 on the 2005 season, but also turned in two solid performances against stiff competition – lending encouragement that the Mount's winning ways are on the horizon.

The Dolphins opened the game sluggish, trailing by 17 points at one point, and fell behind 29-17 at halftime. However, the second half was a different story as the Mount's intensity picked up, along with their defense. Mount Saint Vincent chipped away at the Clarkson lead throughout the final 20 minutes, and even brought the game within two points as the final minute wound down. A crucial rebound by freshman Ashley Farrow (Ocean, NJ/Ocean Township HS) with 36 seconds remaining in the game allowed senior Andrea DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters) to hit a jump shot with 21 seconds left to make it a 50-48 game. However, the Mount was then forced to foul, and Clarkson converted both of their free throws to put the game away.

DiNizo finished the game with 10 points, as did freshman Drew Gomes (Thomaston, CT/Thomaston HS). Senior Meagan Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of Victory) led the Dolphins with 13 points, while fellow senior Lauren DeRosa (Hawthorne, NY/Westlake HS) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Gomes was named to the All-Tournament team for her fine play during the first two games of her collegiate career.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Monday night when they travel to Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York for their Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) opener at 7:00 p.m.
