Dolphins Take Showdown With John Jay

Union, NJ - The University of Mount Saint Vincent powered past John Jay in a high-scoring contest, using a big middle innings surge to secure the victory by the score of 11-8.

UMSV returned to the win column and improved their overall record to 8-16 this season.

The Dolphins struck first in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly from Stephen Marinez, before adding another run in the second on an RBI single from Zach Turko. After extending the lead in the third, UMSV broke things open with a four-run frame. Andrew Farina and Carter Niles delivered key extra-base hits, with Niles driving in two on a ground-rule double to give the Dolphins a 6-1 advantage.

John Jay answered with a four-run third inning to cut the deficit to 6-4, but the Dolphins responded immediately. They plated four more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Marinez, an RBI single from Kyle Brindisi, and an RBI triple from Farina to stretch the lead to 10-4.

John Jay mounted another push in the fifth, scoring four runs to make it a two-run game, but the Dolphins held firm down the stretch. UMSV added an insurance run in the ninth on Turko's RBI double to seal the win.

Turko, Farina and Niles each recorded three hits, with the infield trio continuing their individual offensive success this season. Marinez led the charge with three RBI, while Turko, Farina, Niles and Brindisi each plated two.

Head coach Matt Rienzi used eight different pitchers to ensure the win, with Will Granata striking out six across just 2.2 innings to start things off. Jacob Wenzel, Logan Caves, Gavin Weinstock, Joseph Santos and Michael Iocco each allowed zero hits, with Iocco earning the save in the ninth.

The Dolphins will continue a stretch of non-conference action on Thusday on the road against Penn State Abington.
