Abington, PA - The University of Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off Penn State Abington, falling after a big middle-inning surge by the score of 17-3.
The result dropped UMSV to 8-17 this season.
The Dolphins struck first in the opening inning, as Michael Vascellaro delivered a two-RBI double to right center, scoring Pablo Austin and Will Granata to give his team a two run advantage. THe Nittany Lions would quickly responded, tying the game in the first and then taking control with a four-run second inning to move ahead 5-2.
UMSV trimmed the deficit in the third when Vascellaro came through again with an RBI single, but Penn State Abington answered right back with two more runs in the inning to extend its lead. The Nittany Lions continued to capitalize on defensive miscues, adding runs in the fifth before breaking the game open in the sixth with a seven-run frame.
Vascellaro and Granata tied for the team lead with two hits apiece, with Vascellaro driving in each run. Michael Varriale and Nicholas Rodgers each struck out two in relief appearances, and Varriale also didn't allow an earned run across two frames.
The Dolphins are back in conference action this weekend, starting with a double header against Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday.
