Madison, NJ – The University of Mount Saint Vincent opened its 2026 season with a hard fought, back and forth contest that ultimately resulted in a 9-8 loss to FDU-Florham. After falling behind early, the Dolphins responded with balanced scoring and stayed within striking distance, forcing a tense finish before the home side scored late to edge ahead.
UMSV's offense was paced by Ella Meberg, who delivered a team-high three goals while consistently attacking the cage. Isabelle Gurley and Laziza Azimova also starred in the scoring column, with Gurley scoring two goals and Azimova finishing with one goal and a team-best two assists. Nevaeh Martin found the back of the net in her collegiate debut, and Divana Carrillo added a strike as well, showcasing a balanced attack from UMSV's offense.
Reigning First Team All-Skyline selection Makenna Reekie returned to net and made 10 saves in the loss. Both Meberg and Brittany Boyle recorded one caused turnover each
The Dolphins fell behind 3-2 but fought back late in the first with goals from Meberg and Martin to stay close. UMSV again responded after conceding the first score in the second quarter, with Gurley and Carrillo tallying goals to knot the game at 4-4 going into halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams trade possessions and scores, with Meberg and Gurley adding to UMSV's total even as FDU-Florham edged ahead 8-6. In the fourth, the Dolphins pulled but couldn't complete the comeback in the final minutes.
The Dolphins will use the upcoming week to regroup before heading back on the road next week, this time to challenge Eastern University.
