Patchogue, NY - After a sweep at the hands of Farmingdale State over the weekend, the University of Mount Saint Vincent reverted to their winning ways on Wednesday evening. The Dolphins took the trip back out to Long Island, this time taking on St. Joseph's University - and this time out, they'd pick up the win in game two (4-2) after dropping game one (11-3).
The results put UMSV at 7-13 overall and 3-3 against the Skyline this season.
The Dolphins struggled to get things going in game one. The offense only had eight total baserunners, with
Ireyshka Lebron, Miralba Sandez,
Sabrina Colon,
Simone Caruso and
Sierra Romero each recorded one hit while Sandez,
Aaliyah Dejesus and
Kendra Rodriguez drew walks. Freshman
Paige Staley was a bright spot in the contest, as the Astoria native threw three no-hit innings to finish the game.
Hurler
Gracie Laukkanen was the star for UMSV in game two, continuing her tremendous first season with the Dolphins. Laukkanen shut down a strong Golden Eagles offense, allowing just two runs (none earned) across six hits while striking out 12 in all seven innings of action.
The Dolphins offense was quiet to kick the game off, but picked it off in the latter half of the outing. They would take a one run lead in the top half of the fourth when Caruso reached on an error. Sandez and
Chloe Hart would then do their part, with Sandez collecting an RBI with a double to center while Hart would follow her with an RBI single of her own. Lebron would put the icing on the cake with an RBI single in the sixth.
Sophomore
Paige Goerman reached base three times in four at-bats with a single and two walks.
The Dolphins will take a break from conference play to challenge Brooklyn College on April 12.
