Offense Plates 15 Runs, Laukkanen Shines In Split With Bears

Bronx, NY - The weekend of bad weather held off on Sunday, the perfect time for the University of Mount Saint Vincent to return to the diamond to challenge St. Joseph's University Brooklyn in the team's latest Skyline double header. The Dolphins kept their conference record at an even .500 when they went on to split the day. The Bears emerged victorious by the score of 13-6 in game one before a fantastic pitching performance by Gracie Laukkanen propelled UMSV to a 9-1 victory in game two.

Brooklyn didn't waste time getting on the board, as they would jump out to an early three run lead before the Dolphins could come to bat. To UMSV's credit, they would respond right away, a theme that would persist for most of game one. Shortstop Sabrina Colon would cut into the Bears' deficit, as her first inning single drove home Aaliyah Dejesus to make it a two run contest. The Bears would continue to excel on the offensive end, with four more runs being scored in the top half of the second.

From there, the Dolphins would continue to chip away. In the bottom half of the fifth, small ball would be the name of the game. Colon recorded a productive ground out that drove home Kendra Rodriguez, which would be followed by an RBI single from Ireyshka Lebron. Miralba Sandez would drive in a run of her own with a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to within three runs once again. Lebron would collect two additional RBI with a double, but the Bears would continue their strong outing to finish off game one.

Laukkanen, who has impressed all season long, did so again in game two. The Keizer, Oregan native completely shut down the offense that just put up double digit runs, allowing just one run (none earned) and three hits in a complete game effort. Laukkanen got out of jams in both the fourth and fifth innings, both of which saw the bases loaded.

The bats, meanwhile, were equally as dominant. The bottom of the fourth saw the Dolphins score six runs, with Dejesus, Lebron, Miralba, Chloe Hart and Paige Goerman each recording RBI as the team would bat around the order.

Dejesus and Hart would both go three-for-three at the plate while Lebron, Sierra Romero and Simone Caruso had two hits apiece. Dejesus also went three-for-four in game one, with Lebron, Samantha Aviles and Paige Goerman comibing for six hits.

UMSV will look to keep the momentum on their side in a weekday matchup against Manhattanville University.
