Purchase, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball team headed up to nearby Purchase College on Friday evening for a Skyline Tri-Match. The Dolphins struggled in their first match of the night against New Jersey City University, losing in three sets, but were able to take a set from the hosting Panthers in their second match.
UMSV did their best to avenge their loss to NJCU on Wednesday night, but the Gothic Knights were too much to overcome. NJCU set the tone early with 7 straight points and continued to go on multiple runs in the first set. The Dolphins picked up the pace in the second, even seeing a lead of their own with the help of freshman
Terrence Short, graduate student
James Rose, and senior
Olatomiwa Ibitayo. The Gothic Knights however continued their dominant play to close out the match.
Junior
Matthew Barrancos finished with 12 assists and 7 digs. Ibitayo led the Dolphins in kills with 6, while senior
Carlos Martinez added 6 digs.
Despite their tough loss to NJCU, UMSV came out ready to go against Purchase. The Dolphins and Panthers would exchange leads throughout the first set, however a late run sparked by a kill from Rose and a service ace from Barrancos gave UMSV a 23-20 lead. Purchase responded, but a kill from Ibitayo allowed the Dolphins to take the first set 25-23. Unfortunately for UMSV, the Panthers found their rhythm and would go on to win the next three sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-19).
Ibitayo impressed with 13 kills and a block assist. Short also made an impact with 10 kills, two digs, a service ace, and a block. Barrancos tallied up 35 assists to go along with 7 digs. Rose finished with 10 digs, 9 kills, and two service aces. Freshman
