Caven Point, NJ - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team secured their second win of the season on Tuesday evening, defeating New Jersey City University 7-5. The Dolphins came out swinging and set the tone early, building momentum that would carry them through the game.
The offensive surge began right away in the first inning, as the Dolphins wasted no time putting three runs on the board. Graduate student
Joey DiNorcia would get the first hit for UMSV, a double that drove in junior Josh McCormick. The Dolphins continued their strong offensive play, scoring in the second, third, and fourth innings.
In the third inning, senior
Stephen Marinez singled to center field and scored a run off of another clutch hit from DiNorcia. The offensive rhythm continued into the fourth inning with another hit from Marinez that allowed senior
Jason Albert to cross home plate.
The Dolphins finished the game with a total of 10 hits, but also impressed on the defensive side playing error-free in the final three innings and preventing the home team from mounting a late comeback. Strong pitching also contributed to UMSV's success with juniors
Michael Iocco and
Luke Buyes on the mound, along with freshman
Joseph Santos, who earned his first collegiate win.
Leading the way offensively for the Dolphins was DiNorcia, Marinez, and Albert, all recording two hits, while DiNorcia and Marinez also tallied two RBIs apiece. Head coach
Matthew Rienzi saw contributions from up and down the lineup, with McCormick, seniors
Dom Porto and
Conor Martin, and junior Austin Pablo each registering a hit to keep the offense rolling.
With two straight wins, the Dolphins will look to extend their winning streak to three games. They are back in action on Tuesday, March 11, as they head to William Patterson University for another non-conference game.
