Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Dolphins Struggle in Tri-Match on the Road

Brooklyn, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball team closed out their busy week on Saturday with a Skyline tri-match at St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn. The Dolphins would fall in both contests to the hosting Bears and the Roadrunners of Ramapo College.

In the first match, both teams would exchange points early on until St. Joe's went on a 5-0 run to secure a comfortable 10-4 lead. The Dolphins were able to capitalize on their opponent's errors, however struggled to create on their own in the first set. UMSV found their rhythm by the second, jumping to a 13-11 lead after going on a 4-0 run. The Bears responded with their own scoring spree to put them up 23-16, however graduate student Felix Paulino gave the Dolphins a chance at a comeback with three consecutive service aces. Unfortunately, UMSV fell short and lost 25-20. The Dolphins continued to compete in the third, but once again could not find an answer.

Freshman Terrence Short did a little bit of everything for the Dolphins, finishing with 5 kills, 4 digs, 2 blocks, and 2 assists. Senior Olatomiwa Ibitayo and sophomore Yestro Luciano Jr. both added 6 kills and a block, while Paulino had 17 assists and 7 digs.

For their second match of the day, the Dolphins faced the Roadrunners, who they lost to earlier this week. Although the Dolphins dropped the first set, they put together a strong performance giving them momentum going into the second. The Dolphins were relentless, scoring six straight points to put them up 15-13 after trailing the entire set. Both teams would go on to exchange leads, but it was a clutch kill from Short that gave the Dolphins hope. The Dolphins led 25-24, but the Roadrunners would close out the set with three straight points. UMSV unfortunately could not overcome Ramapo in third set either and would finish the day 0-2.

Ibitayo led the Dolphins with 8 kills, 4 digs, two aces, and a block. Short finished with 8 kills, 3 digs, and a block, while Luciano Jr. added 3 kills and 2 blocks. Paulino tallied up 16 assists and 5 digs. Senior Carlos Martinez also added 5 digs.

The Dolphins are back in action and will look to get back in the win column on Monday, March 31, as they take on Sarah Lawrence College inside the Sharp Center.
