Mahwah, NJ - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball team headed to Ramapo College on Thursday evening for a conference match with the Roadrunners. After a slow start, the Dolphins eventually found their rhythm to keep things competitive, but the Roadrunners ultimately proved that they were too much for UMSV to overcome.
The home team jumped ahead early in the first set with a 6-0 run, but a kill from freshman
Terrence Short would put an end to the Ramapo's scoring spree. The Roadrunners would go on another 6-0 run which unfortunately put the set out of the Dolphins' reach and they would lose 25-9.
UMSV may have faced some early struggles, but they were resilient in the second set. The Roadrunners secured an early 6-1 lead, but five straight points from the Dolphins would tie things up with graduate student
James Rose and sophomore
Yestro Luciano Jr. contributing key kills. UMSV went on to see a brief lead at 8-7, which was sparked by a kill from senior
Olatomiwa Ibitayo. It was a back-and-forth battle until the Roadrunners reclaimed and extended their lead with their own 5-0 run, and they would go on to take the set.
The Dolphins continued their strong play in the third set with Luciano Jr. and Ibitayo once again making key plays. The Roadrunners quickly built another early lead, making it difficult for UMSV to complete their comeback attempt, resulting in a 25-18 loss.
Ibitayo led the Dolphins with 7 kills, 4 digs, and a block. Luciano Jr. finished with 5 kills and Rose added 5 digs and 4 kills. Senior
Carlos Martinez led in digs with 7, while graduate student
Felix Paulino had 17 assists and 4 digs.
The Dolphins will face the Roadrunners once again on Saturday, March 29, as they head to St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn for a Skyline tri-match.
