Wayne, NJ - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team was looking to continue their winning ways on Thursday as they headed to William Paterson University for a non-conference doubleheader with the Pioneers. The home team would get the best of the Dolphins, winning game one by the score of 4-1 and followed by a 5-2 victory in game two.
It was a slow start to game one until the bottom of the fifth when the Pioneers recorded five hits to drive in all four of their runs. UMSV responded as sophomore
Mirabla Sandez sent freshman
Kendra Rodriguez home in the top of the sixth, however strong defense from William Paterson would ultimately prevent the Dolphins from sparking a late comeback.
Freshman
Samantha Aviles impressed once again, leading UMSV with two hits, while Rodriguez and seniors
Aaliyah Dejesus and
Sierra Romero all finished with one.
The Pioneers may have taken game one and jumped to an early 4-0 lead in game two, but the Dolphins continued to fight back. UMSV immediately answered in the top of third with a double down the left field line from Aviles to advance Dejesus to third, who would then go on to score off of an RBI from fellow senior
Sabrina Colon. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the gap was too big to bridge as they would not get on the board again until the sixth inning when a single to left field from freshman
Chloe Hart sent Colon home once again.
Dejesus led UMSV in hits with three, while Hart finished with two hits and an RBI. Freshman pitcher
Elizabeth Espinosa struck out three of the ten betters she faced.
The Dolphins are back in action on Saturday, March 29, with another non-conference doubleheader, this time against Lehman College.
