Bronx, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team kicked off their Skyline Conference schedule on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Yeshiva University. The Dolphins dominated in both games, playing strong defense and putting up an impressive 29 runs total.
UMSV set the tone early, scoring two runs in the first inning which saw sophomore
Paige Goerman and junior
Emma Capozucca register hits. The Dolphins extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third, but it was a 10-run inning in the fourth that ultimately put the game out of the Maccabees' reach. A triple to left field from freshman
Samantha Aviles would start the Dolphins' scoring spree. The infielder from Los Angeles, California, went on to hit a two-run single later in the inning to help secure UMSV's 14-1 victory.
Aviles led the Dolphins in hits with 3 and RBIs with 4. Goerman added two hits, while Capozucca and freshman
Elizabeth Espinosa both finished with two RBIs. Espinosa also received her first win and struck out a career-high 8 batters.
The Dolphins continued to impress in game two, recording a total of 17 hits. The Dolphins jumped to an early 4-0 in the first inning thanks to key hits from senior
Sabrina Colon and freshmen
Kendra Rodriguez,
Gracie Laukkanen, and
Leanez Estrada. Laukkanen, who was just named Skyline Pitcher of the Week, went on to hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the second to help extend the Dolphins' lead to 9-0. UMSV remained consistent as they brought in another five runs in the third, which was highlighted by two two-run doubles from Capozucca and Laukkanen. UMSV would go on to win 15-0, securing a 2-0 start to Skyline action.
The freshmen duo of Aviles and Laukkanen led the way with 3 hits each. Colon, Rodriguez, and Estrada combined for 6 hits at 2 apiece. Laukkanen had a career-high 4 RBIs, while Colon, Capozucca, freshman
Chloe Hart, and Estrada each had two.
Next up for the Dolphins is a trip to William Paterson University on Thursday, March 27, for a doubleheader with the Pioneers.
