Dolphins Win One of Two in Doubleheader Against Hawks

New York, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team got right back into action after returning from Myrtle Beach earlier this week. The Dolphins headed to Randall's Island on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Hawks of Hunter College. UMSV fell short in game one, but closed out the day with dominant 10-1 victory in game two.

The Dolphins impressed early on, putting up four runs in the first inning with senior Aaliyah Dejesus once again registering the first hit. The top of the first was capped off by back-to-back doubles from sophomores Mirabla Sandez and Paige Goerman. UMSV maintained their lead until a three-run inning from the Hawks put them up by two at the end of third. The Dolphins struggled to find a response and would ultimately fall to the Hawks by three runs.

Dejesus, Sandez, and Goerman all finished with 2 hits each, while sophomore Ireyshka Lebron led with 2 RBIs.

The Hawks would a hit home run to start game two, but this did not seem to faze the Dolphins as they immediately answered with two runs of their own in the top of the second. UMSV extended their lead with a dominant fourth inning that saw an impressive 7 hits. The Dolphins continued their strong play, holding Hunter scoreless, while also putting up two more runs in the final inning.

Dejesus and freshmen duo Samantha Aviles and Chloe Hart all registered 2 hits, with Hart and junior Emma Capozucca both recording doubles. UMSV tallied 8 total RBIs, half of which came from Dejesus and Aviles. Freshman pitcher Gracie Laukkanen received the win.

The Dolphins are right back at it tomorrow, March 23, with another doubleheader. UMSV will host John Jay College at Manhattanville with the first pitch being thrown at 12PM.
