Dolphins Fall to Bloodhounds

Purchase, NY - After Saturday's doubleheader, the University of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team was right back on the field for another one on Sunday. The Dolphins would ultimately fall to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in both games, but were just shy of a comeback in game two.

UMSV started off strong in game one, jumping to an early 3-1 lead with sophomores Ireyshka Lebron and Mirabla Sandez being the driving forces. Lebron doubled to left field and Sandez kept the momentum going with a home run. The Bloodhounds took the lead by the third inning, meanwhile the Dolphins remained scoreless until the bottom of seventh when UMSV brought in two runs, however it was too late to spark a comeback.

Freshman Samantha Aviles led the Dolphins in hits with two. Sandez's home run gave her two RBIs, while Aviles and Lebron both finished with one.

UMSV showed their resilience in game two, battling back from a five-run deficit with late runs to keep the game within reach. The Dolphins would score their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth with freshman Elizabeth Espinosa and senior Sabrina Colon leading the charge. Sophomore Paige Goerman kept UMSV going in the sixth, hitting a double to right field and later scoring off of a sacrifice fly from freshman Chloe Hart

The Dolphins were relentless and impressed in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs off six hits. Sandez, Colon, and junior Emma Capozuccca strung together three consecutive hits. Senior Aaliyah Dejesus would then reach first base on an error from the Bloodhounds. UMSV continued to connect, as Goerman, Hart, and senior Sierra Romero all registered hits. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, their early struggles were too much to overcome and they would lose by two.

Colon and Goerman both finished with 3 hits, while Sandez and Romero added two. Hart led the way with 2 RBIs.

The Dolphins will look to bounce back as they begin conference play on Tuesday, March 25, with a doubleheader against Yeshiva University.
