Dolphins Drop Game One, Win Game Two for First Victory of the Season

Myrtle Beach, SC - After getting rained out on Monday, the University of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team was back in action on Tuesday. The Dolphins dropped their first game against the Mounties of Mount Aloysius College, but were able to secure their first win of the 2025 season when they faced the Hartwick College Hawks.

UMSV jumped to an early 4-0 lead in game one, until Mount Aloysius put up five runs off of three hits in the third inning. The Mounties had another strong inning in the fourth, driving in three more runs and extending their lead to 8-4. The Dolphins however found their offensive rhythm in the bottom of the fourth as senior Aaliyah Dejesus got things going with a double. Senior Sabrina Colon and junior Savannah Autobee also registered hits which drove in two runs for the Dolphins.

Mount Aloysius put up two more runs in the top of the sixth, increasing their lead to four. UMSV was able to respond with a double from sophomore Paige Goerman that sent Autobee and Colon home. Both teams would go scoreless in the seventh and the Mounties would take the win.

Colon led the Dolphins in hits with 2 and Goerman led in RBIs with 2. Junior first baseman Emma Capozucca finished with 13 putouts, while Colon, Autobee, and sophomore Ireyshka Lebron had 3 assists each.

In their second game of the day, sophomore Mirabla Sandez helped set the tone early with a double to left field. The Dolphins were able to put up two runs in the top of the second, but the Hawks answered with two of their own. UMSV continued their strong play in the third, scoring two more runs, highlighted by another double to left field, this time from Lebron.

Hartwick scored again in the fifth, cutting the Dolphins' lead to just one, but a seventh-inning triple from Dejesus that drove in two runs along with perfect defense allowed the Dolphins to secure the win.

Dejesus finished with 3 RBIs. Coach Kevin Carbon also saw tremendous performances from multiple freshmen: Chloe Hart, Samantha Aviles, Paige Staley, and Gracie Laukkanen. Hart had 9 putouts, while Aviles added 3 assists. Staley received the win with five strikeouts, while Laukkanen was awarded the save.

The Dolphins will close out their spring break trip with three games on Wednesday.
