Myrtle Beach, SC - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team extended their win streak to six games on Tuesday after sweeping Western Connecticut State University in a thrilling doubleheader. With an 8-2 record, the Dolphins are off to the best start in program history under the leadership of new head coach Matt Rienzi.
The Wolves got on the board first, but the Dolphins answered right back with a run of their own in the second off of an RBI from senior
Dom Porto. Both teams remained scoreless until UMSV put up 2 runs in the fifth inning off of home runs from graduate student
Joey DiNorcia and senior
Conor Martin. The Dolphins put away game one in the sixth inning, scoring an impressive 6 runs to secure the 9-4 victory.Â
Porto, DiNorcia, and sophomore
Zach Turko led UMSVÂ in hits with 2 each, meanwhile Martin and junior
Pablo Austin both had 2 RBIs. Junior pitcher
Michael Iocco impressed on the mound, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
The Dolphins secured the sweep in game two with a hard-fought 4-3 victory. Western Connecticut saw an early 2-0 lead, however UMSVÂ responded in the bottom of the second inning, scoring off of a single from Turko. It remained a one-run game, with the Dolphins trailing, until the seventh inning, where the Dolphins proved why they are so tough to beat.
Porto recorded the first hit in the bottom of the seventh, and would later score off a double from junior
Joshua McCormick. It was a two-run walk-off double from DiNorcia that secured the win for the Dolphins.
McCormick and DiNorcia led the way for UMSV with 2 hits each. Junior right-handed pitcher
Gerjuan Tyrus claimed his second win for the Dolphins this season, while senior
Nicholas Rodriguez recorded 5 strikeouts.
The Dolphins will wrap up in Myrtle Beach with another doubleheader on Wednesday.
