Dolphins Dominate Day One in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach, SC - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team is spending their spring break in Myrtle Beach for a series of non-conference games. On Monday, the Dolphins faced the Panthers of Plymouth State University to kick off their week in South Carolina. UMSV dominated and powered past the Panthers 21-11.

Plymouth State put up an early run in the first inning, but the Dolphins responded in the second, with a double from senior Conor Martin which drove in graduate student JT Jimenez. UMSV found their rhythm in the fourth inning, scoring 3 runs off of 3 hits, and would go on to score in every inning for the rest of the game. It was graduate student Joey DiNorcia who got things going for the Dolphins in fourth with a double that sent Jimenez home once again. Junior Pablo Austin registered a hit to drive in DiNorcia, which was then followed by a hit from sophomore Zach Turko to send Austin home.

UMSV continued their strong play, but notably impressed in the seventh and ninth innings, which saw six and five runs respectively, led by hits from Austin, senior Jason Albert, and junior Will Granata. The Dolphins also found success through aggressive base running, totaling 7 stolen bases, along with playing near-perfect baseball, seeing just one error in the whole game.

Austin led UMSV in hits with 5, while Albert and Granta recorded 3 each. The Dolphins tallied up as many RBIs as they did runs, and were led by Austin with 5, while junior Joshua McCormick had 4. Defensively, Albert carried UMSV with 8 putouts, while senior pitcher Alex Alvarez was awarded the win. Alvarez recorded 5 strikeouts, while junior left-handed pitcher Tristen Leone struck out two of the seven batters he faced.

Now 6-2 and on a four-game winning streak, the Dolphins will face the Western Connecticut State Wolves on Tuesday, March 18.
