Riverdale, NY - After a big conference win on Wednesday, the University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team was looking to continue their winning ways on Saturday afternoon and the Dolphins did just that. UMSV came out with a 67-66 victory over Manhattanville as sophomore
Alex Chi knocked down a tough jumper in the paint in the final seconds.
After a slow start from both teams, it was freshman
Eric Woodberry who would get the scoring started. The Valiants would then go on an 8-0 run, however the Dolphins immediately responded with a layup from freshman
Blake Salice-Mitchell and six straight points from junior
Josiah Basket to put the Dolphins up 10-8. The Dolphins and Valiants would go on to exchange baskets for the remainder of the first half, but a jumper from Basket with 30 seconds remaining gave the Dolphins a 32-30 lead going into halftime.
It was neck and neck in the second half until an 8-0 run by the Dolphins put them up 44-37. UMSV was able to maintain their lead until a three pointer from the Valiants tied it up 54-54 with just under five minutes left to play. However, the Dolphins instantly answered with six consecutive points from Salice-Mitchell,
Max DePina, and Basket.
The Dolphins stayed ahead until the Valiants knocked down a pair of free throws giving them a one-point lead with 10 seconds remaining forcing a
James Mooney timeout. The Dolphins would inbound the ball to freshman
Aidan McCahey who was able to find Chi on the right wing. Chi drove to the middle and was able to get off an impressive jumper to beat the buzzer and put the Dolphins up by one. With 1.6 seconds left on the clock, the Valiants called a timeout, but could not convert against the Dolphins' defense.
Chi finished with 15 points, his sixth consecutive game scoring in double figures, on an efficient 75% shooting and dished out 4 assists. With now four double-doubles this season, DePina put up 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Basket added 15 points and 3 rebounds. Salice-Mitchell shot 100% from the field and was good for 10 points, 4 rebounds and a pair of assists.
The Dolphins will be back on their home court in the Sharp Center on Tuesday night for another Skyline Conference battle against Yeshiva.
