Montclair, NJ - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team kicked off their 2025 season at Montclair State University on Tuesday afternoon. It was a challenging match up against the Red Hawks and the Dolphins would ultimately fall 14-5.
Neither team scored a run until an RBI from senior
Dom Porto sent sophomore
Zach Turko home in the sixth inning. The Red Hawks responded with two runs of their own off of two hits. The Dolphins would go on to score three runs in the 7th, good for a 4-2 lead, until the home team responded with a seven-run inning. UMSV struggled defensively allowing 5 runs in the eighth. The Red Hawks continued their strong play and unfortunately the gap was too big to bridge for the Dolphins.
Senior right-handed pitched
Alex Alvarez delivered a strong performance from the mound racking up four strikeouts in the first five innings. Freshman
Joseph Santos began his collegiate career by adding two more strikeouts to the tally in just one inning.
At the plate, Porto and fellow senior
Jason Albert, along with graduate student
Joey DiNorcia led the way, all going two for five. Sophomore
Zach Turko added to the offense, going two for four with an RBI and a run scored, while senior
Conor Martin made an impact with two hits in three at-bats, along with a walk. Despite the tough loss, Coach Matt Rienzi's new team recorded an impressive 13 hits.
The Dolphins will look to bounce back this Friday, February 28, for another non-conference game, this time at Saint Elizabeth University.
