Annandale-On-Hudson, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball headed up to Bard College on Saturday morning to face the hosting Raptors and the John Jay Bloodhounds in a tri-match. The Dolphins lost both matches, but were able to take a set from the Bloodhounds.
Despite dropping the match against Bard 0-3, head coach
Jeremiah Huntt saw excellent play from his new team. The Raptors saw a 13-7 lead early in the first set, however UMSV was able to quickly respond with consecutive kills from graduate
James Rose and senior Ibitayo Olatomiwa and back-to-back service aces from graduate
Felix Paulino. The Dolphins kept up, however would lose the first set 22-25. UMSV continued to show their strengths in the second set as a kill from freshman
Tyler Hanna would tie things up 22-22. The Dolphins struggled in the third set as the Raptors went on multiple runs and would come out on top 17-25.
Rose finished the first match with 8 kills, 3 service aces and 3 digs. Junior
Matthew Barrancos led the way in assists with 13, while senior
Carlos Martinez led the way in digs with 7.
After dropping the first two sets against John Jay, the Dolphins came out determined in the third. The Bloodhounds had a 24-22 lead, but strong defense from the Dolphins was enough to put them on top 26-24. Hanna continued to impress with 6 kills and 3 block assists, while Olatomiwa had 7 kills and two block assists. Rose added 7 digs and 6 kills. Barrancos and Martinez once again led the Dolphins in assists (22) and digs (11).
The Dolphins will look to get their first win of the year on Wednesday as they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Arcadia University.
