Newburgh, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team headed to Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday for a pivotal Skyline Conference match up. It was a hard-fought battle and a game of runs, but the Dolphins fell short against the Knights, losing 66-56.
The Dolphins started strong, securing an early 8-2 lead, with freshman
Blake Salice-Mitchell making his presence known in the paint. The Knights picked up their defense, holding the Dolphins scoreless for nearly six minutes, and went on their own run giving them a 12-8 lead. Transfer
Max DePina helped bring UMSV back on top with six straight points. Sophomore
Louis Vidal also went on a personal run, scoring five straight points in the last minute of the first half giving the Dolphins a 30-29 lead. The home team, however, knocked down a late three pointer putting them up by two going into the second half.
The Knights set the tone to start the second half with back-to-back three pointers. The Dolphins responded with a 9-0 run, which was capped off by a three pointer from DePina, tying things up 41-41 and forcing a timeout from the Knights. Free throws from graduate
DJ Tucker gave the Dolphins the last lead they would see with just under eight minutes left to play. The Dolphins struggled to convert, meanwhile the Knights went on a 10-0 run securing their win.
DePina led all scorers with 22 points, while also adding 6 rebounds and a pair of assists. Salice-Mitchell put up 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Sophomore
Alex Chi added 8 points, 3 steals and 3 rebounds. Vidal finished with 8 rebounds and 5 points, while freshman
Eric Woodberry had 5 points and 5 rebounds.
The Dolphins are back in action on Wednesday, this time on their home court, for another Skyline Conference battle against Sarah Lawrence College.
