Dolphins Suffer Loss In Hard Fought Battle Against William Paterson

Riverdale, NY - The Dolphins continue to put together strong performances - and it's only a matter of time before it's reflected on their record.

The University of Mount Saint Vincent returned to non-conference action, challenging William Paterson University with the hopes of winning their second contest this season. Despite a inspired group effort by the team, the Dolphins fell to the Pioneers 87-78, bringing their record to 1-8 on the season.

Eric Woodberry exploded for 26 points, including an impressive 12-of-15 stretch from the charity stripe. The number was also a season-high for Woodberry, who also added 11 rebounds, four assists and a steal to his well-rounded stat line. Sophomore Blake Salice-Mitchell was efficient for head coach James Mooney off the bench. He scored 14 points on just five shots (across seven attempts) while also adding an assist. Alex Chi also finished in double figures, adding 12 points of his own.

Freshman Tyler Conlee gave the Dolphins a tremendous boost of the bench, scoring a career high eight points while knocking down two big three pointers in as many attempts. Junior Joel Gado had an eight-point, 10-board effort in the contest as well.

UMSV kicked off the game in impressive fashion, as they scored eight unanswered points to start the contest. Woodberry, Chi and Gado were all responsible for the scoring surge. William Paterson, however, picked up their intensity on both ends of the floor, seeing their lead reach double figures and eventually leading by four points at halftime.

The Pioneers saw their advantage reach to as high as 10 points with just over 16 minutes left in regulation, but it was then when the Dolphins began their comeback attempt. It all started with the sophomore duo of Woodberry and Salice-Mitchell; they collectively cut into William Paterson's lead when Woodberry scored a layup, with the ensuing possession seeing him pick up the assist on a Salice-Mitchell and-one layup.

The Dolphins then made it a one-possession game when Conlee knocked down a clutch three to bring the score to 52-50. Woodberry and Salice-Mitchell would keep the game close with additional scores, with Aidan McCahey tying the game at the 12:23 mark with a pair of free throws. Conlee and McCahey continued to find success at the charity stripe, with the two knockign down a pair of free throws each to reclaim the lead by the score of 63-60.

Conlee's second three of the game pushed the Dolphins to lead by five less than five minutes in regulation. Woodberry and Gado both scored once more to keep their team on top, but a late push by the Pioneers helped them regain the lead and keep it until time expired.

The Dolphins next welcome Washington College (Maryland) to Riverdale to close out their first-half schedule.
