Riverdale, NY - A questionable late foul call was the difference between a potenial victory and a tough loss for the Dolphins.
The University of Mount Saint Vincent closed out their slate of games in the year 2025 with a home showdown against Washington College of Maryland. The Dolphins were hoping to secure a victory ahead of conference play in the new year, but it was the Shoremen who put the final points on the board to win by the score of 67-65.
UMSV wraps up their first half of the season with a 1-9 record.
Sophomore
Eric Woodberry once again put together a strong all around performance for the Dolphins. The Greenburgh, New York native paced all scorers with 23, upping his season average to 17 per game. Woodberry also added eight rebounds and four assists, continuing to do a little bit of everything for his team.
Alex Chi and
Joel Gado also finished with 15 points apiece, with each adding more to the game beyond their scoring totals. Chi led the way with five assists as he took on more of a playmaking role, in addition to eight boards, while Gado's 13 rebounds gave him his third double double of the year.
Blake Salice-Mitchell returned to the starting lineup and added six points, three boards and an assist while
Aidan McCahey and Brendal Baldi combined for six points of their own.
For the second straight contest, the Dolphins climbed out of an early, double digit first half hole. Trailing by as many as 10 with less than 10 minutes to go, Woodberry, Chi and Salice-Mitchell did their part offensively to make it a one possession game. Over that span, Woodberry not only got into the paint and converted two tough layups, but also went three-for-three from the charity stripe. Baskets from Woodberry and Chi in the final minute made it a one point game going into the break.
The Dolphins picked up their intensity on both ends of the floor to kick off the second. They would see their lead balloon to as many as eight points when Woodberry intercepted a pass and secured the fast break layup at the other end. To Washington's credit, they clamped down defensively and knocked down big shots, going on an 11-0 run to reclaim the lead with 5:28 remaining in regulation.
Gado would then go on a seven point run all by himself, finding success time after time in the paint to bring the score 63-59. He would then tie the game with a pair of free throws with 1:20 remaining.
The Shoremen received the ball with the shot clock off, as the Dolphins looked to force overtime. Washington got the whistle with just 0.3 seconds on the clock, and converted both attempts to capture the win.
The Dolphins will be off for the remainder of 2025. They'll return to conference play on January 4 with a tilt against Yeshiva University.
