Lyndhurst, NJ - The Dolphins turned yet another thrilling game into a victory.
The University of Mount Saint Vincent challenged Yeshiva University on Saturday, with the hope of remaining unbeaten with a week to go until the Skyline Conference postseason tournament. Despite a strong comeback attempt by the Maccabees, it was the Dolphins who responded last, as the team walked away with an impressive 3-2 victory to keep their win streak alive.
UMSV is now 12-0-2 overall and 8-0-2 with one game to go in the regular season.
The first 45 minutes of action featured the defense shining on both ends of the field. The Dolphins offense was aggressive, taking six total shots in the first half while limiting the Maccabees to three.
John Brienza,
Sean Doyle, Jacob Grieffenberger and
Trevor Pegg held Yeshiva to just one shot on goal over that span, one that was saved by sophomore goalkeeper
Samuel Reine.
The offensive action picked up in the second half.
The scoring started with junior midfielder Sebastian Ciurlizza, who broke the scoreless contest with his second strike in as many games just eight minutes into the half. The Maccabees would answer back nine minutes later, tying things up at one with 28 minutes left in regulation.
The score would remain knotted at one until the 80th minute, where the teams combined for three goals. The first came off the foot of reigning Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year
Javier Trujillo, who saw his shot reach the back of the net after a strong pass from Pegg. Yeshiva would once again tie it just 20 seconds later, but UMSV would once again answer. Senior
Luka Gelevski, who already has one game winning goal on his resume just two weeks ago against Mount Saint Mary, once again came through in the clutch for the Dolphins. The Suffolk, United Kingdom native streaked towards the net opposite of
William Sornin, who dribbled past multiple defenders and found Gelevski for the difference maker with just three minutes on the clock.
The Dolphins control their own destiny. A win over Purchase on Tuesday clinches the program's first ever Skyline Conference regular season championship.
