UMSV Can't Convert At Buzzer, Drop Tight Battle To Golden Eagles

Riverdale, NY - After a fantastic road victory against the United States Merchant Marine Academy earlier in the week, the University of Mount Saint Vincent was looking to continue their ascension in the Skyline picture in Riverdale on Saturday afternoon, with the team playing host to St. Joseph's University Long Island. The Dolphins fought valiantly with the Golden Eagles, but it was the visitors who would walk away victorious. Sophomore guard Alex Chi had the chance to propel the Dolphins to victory at the buzzer, but tough defense by the road team put a halt to the comeback attempt.

The Dolphins now sit at 6-11 overall with a 3-5 record in conference competition.

Head coach James Mooney continued to utilized a different group of talents in the starting lineup, and the ball movement with that unit was apparent. Freshmen Aidan McCahey and Eric Woodberry, sophomore Alex Chi and junior Jalen Lewis were all involved, with each scoring the first four baskets for the Dolphins. Forward Max DePina entered the game at the 14:49 mark, and his jumper less than a minute later gave his team their first lead of the afternoon at 12-10.

From there, St. Joe's LI took over, seeing their lead reach as many as eight points with just under six minutes left to play. But UMSV wouldn't back down, as they would go on an 11-0 run to close out the half. DJ Tucker got things going with a jumper before both Lewis and freshman Blake Salice-Mitchell grabbed offensive rebounds and followed it up with buckets of their own. Chi capped off a strong first half when the final two baskets scored were a jumper to tie things up and a three to give the team the lead by the Staten Island native.

Chi carried his momentum into the early portions of the second half. The sophomore would score five of the first eight points for the Dolphins, with his efforts a big reason behind the team's nine point lead in the early goings.

It was then Kevin Agyemang's turn to keep the Dolphins afloat. The Dracut, Massachusetts native scored eight points across five consecutive possessions to keep UMSV's edge in tact. The Golden Eagles, however, would continuously chip away at the Dolphins lead, eventually climbing ahead on the scoreboard with three minutes left. Both sides would trade leads until the end of regulation, with Chi getting a shot at with two seconds left to give his team the victory, but it was St. Joe's who walked away winners.

Chi had a fantastic performance for the Dolphins, as he poured in a career-high 22 points. Agyemang and Tucker also finished in double figures with 15 and 13 points, respectively, with Tucker also recording four rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. Woodberry finished with six points of three-of-five shooting while DePina led the way with seven boards. Lewis went on to pace the Dolphins with two blocks.

The Dolphins will look to return to the win column next week in a tilt against St. Joseph's University Brooklyn.
