Dolphins Come From Behind, Draw With NYU

Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent took Marillac Field for the first time in 2024, facing off against a strong opponent in New York University in a Wednesday night showdown. The Dolphins dominated the possession game early, going up by one goal in the first half. UMSV would then mount a tremendous comeback, scoring two second hal goals resulting in a 3-3 tie.

The defensive trio of reigning First Team All-Skyline recipient Donovan Speer, Nicholas Carvalho and Cesar Mendez did a strong job on the back line, limiting the Violets to just five first half shots, with the only one on net being turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Miguel Fierro. Head coach Jose Dos Santos' offensive unit did a strong job controlling the ball, resulting in the first goal of William Sornin's collegiate career. The Brussels, Belgium native found his way to the bottom right corner of the box, dribbled past two NYU defenders and put his team on the board for the first time this season. Fellow freshman Amos Bignotti registered the assist.

The second half saw the tables turn on the Dolphins. NYU would pick up the pace offensively, taking 16 shots while scoring three straight goals in a six minute span. The result could've but UMSV down for good, but instead rallied to get back on the board.

The first goal came off the foot of Sebastian Andres Ciurlizza, who converted a penalty shot attempt after a hand ball was called in NYU's zone following a challenge by UMSV's offense.

Ciurlizza was once again the driving force behind a Dolphins goal, this time off a corner kick. The sophomore midfielder placed a fantastic ball to the right side of the net, with freshman Javier Trujillo crashing and converting a header. Both goals came within less than a two minute span.

Both sides would trade attempts over the final 14 minutes of action, with the game completing tied at three.

Ciurlizza registered a team-best two shots on goal and two points while Sornin and Trujillo added two shots apiece. Fierro picked up four saves across seven shots on goal.

The Dolphins will now set their sights on New Jersey City University, who make their way to Riverdale this coming Saturday.
