Riverdale, NY - On the heels of a 3-3 tie against a strong New York University team, the University of Mount Saint Vincent returned to their home pitch, this time challenging New Jersey City University in non-conference action. The Dolphins offensive surge continued into Saturday, as the Dolphins would tally another three goals en route to a 3-1 victory.
It was the Dolphins first win of their campaign, and will also go down as the first for head coach
Jose Dos Santos in his UMSV career.
In what has become a theme over the first two games, the Dolphins controlled the pace offensively in the early goings, resulting in points being put on the board. Freshman striker
William Sornin picked up right where he left off on Wednesday, as he scored his second collegiate goal in as many games just six minutes into the action, with sophomore
Nicholas Carvalho registering the assist.
Just three minutes later, it was
Sebastian Andres Ciurlizza's turn, as the second-year midfielder took it all by himself for the second goal of his sophomore season, giving the Dolphins an early two goal edge.
The Gothic Knights, however, wouldn't go down without a fight. The visitors would take nine first half shots and 16 total for the game, but sophomore
Miguel Fierro stood tall in net. The second year goalkeeper made eight saves in the afternoon, one that ended early after a red card for challenging an NJCU forward.
Andrew Tarkazikis would take over in net and make two saves of his own.
NJCU would get on the board in the early goings of the second half to cut their deficit to one. But to UMSV's credit, they would battle valiantly on both ends of the field despite being down a man. Their effort would once again lead to a Sornin goal, with the Brussels, Belgium native finding the back of the net all by himself.
The physicality was apparent on both sides, with the teams combining for 40 fouls. The Dolphins, however, would get the better of the Gothic Knights and emerge victorious.
The home stretch for UMSV continues on Monday, as the Dolphins play host to Brooklyn College on Marillac Field.
