Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Dolphins Emerge Victorious In Five Set Thriller With Pratt

Riverdale, NY - It was a terrific come from behind effort from the University of Mount Saint Vincent's women's volleyball team. After dropping both the third and fourth sets, the Dolphins dug deep and earned two hard fought set wins to close out the contest, to the joy of the loud Sharp Center crowd who came out to support their squad.

The Dolphins, now winners in back-to-back contests, improved their record to 2-4.

Despite being tightly contested, the Dolphins had their advantages throughout. A Reilly Nichtern ace put the Dolphins up 17-12 in the first set, with a kill from the Rockaway Beach, New York native all but finishing the Cannoneers in the opener. UMSV would lose set two by just two points, getting as close as 23-22 thanks to an attack error by Pratt.

The Dolphins would put everything together come set four. They would jump out to an early 6-1 lead, with JaKaia Lotz and Melanieann Broderick accounting for three kills. Pratt would fight back, but UMSV would go on an eight point run with the score 16-13, which included three kills from Lotz. The final set was all but a formality, as UMSV would jump out to a 10-2 lead before walking away winners by the score of 15-4.

"I'm proud of this team tonoght and the grit they showed," said head coach Joe Chojnacki. "Give a lot of credit to Pratt - they were very scrappy. Going down 1-2, we could have rolled over, but we didn't. We found back, steadied out and played really well at the end. This is a win we can hopefully build on."

Lotz had a banner night for the Dolphins. The first year volleyball player registered a career-high 18 kills, also a game best. Nichtern was all over the stat sheet with 21 digs, 15 kills and seven service aces while Broderick added 11 kills of her own. Samantha Rapp helped turn the tide of the game with her serving efforts, collecting four services aces while adding eight digs and a pair of kills. Lydia Aryee continued to stand out in the setter role with 45 helpers, a new career high.

UMSV will look to keep the momentum in their favor when they travel to New Jersey to participate in the Kean Tournament.
