Dolphins Fall To USMMA In Second Conference Game Of Season

Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's lacrosse team hosted their second Skyline Conference game of the 2024 season - and after defeating Purchase College in the opener on Saturday, the Dolphins will looking to carry their momentum into their matchup against the United States Merchant Marine Academy that took place under the lights on Marillac Field. After getting off to an impressive start, UMSV couldn't capitalize on their efforts, as they lost to the Mariners by the score of 21-2. The loss puts the Dolphins at 5-5 overall and 1-1 against the Skyline.

The Dolphins looked the part of a team that will be in playoff contention at the end of the regular season. After strong defense against USMMA's opening possession, UMSV had the ball in the offensive zone and controlled the clock. Transfer Savion Williams received a pass from teammate Jacob Cochran and challenged the defender from the top of the box, eventually beating his opponent to put his team up by one less than two minutes into the action.

The Dolphins defense kept up their pressure on both ends of the field, with their ride defense specifically stepping up. After causing a turnover on the Mariners' clear attempt, the offense once again settled, with Cochran doing things by himself by sneaking a shot past the USMMA goalkepper to extend his team's lead to two.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, USMMA went on to prove why they're one of the top programs in the conference. The Mariners would rattle off 21 straight goals while shutting out UMSV for the remainder of regulation.

The Dolphins defense didn't falter due to a lack of effort. The team would cause nine turnovers, including four shot clock violations. Williams, Cochran, Guillermo, Augie Quirch and Mustapha Daffeh would each record caused turnovers as well. Daffeh would do his best to pace the kickstart the offense, as the transfer went 13 of 20 from the face-off dot while scooping a team-best eight ground balls. Guillermo and fellow defender Chris Meenan would each have five ground balls as well. Sophomore goalkeeper Mark Lulgjuraj made 13 saves in net across 60 minutes of action.

The Dolphins turn their attention to Farmingdale State College on Friday in a road contest.
