Dolphins Fall In Non-Conference Action To New Paltz

New Paltz, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team turns their attention outside of the conference this week, and the action kicked off on Tuesday afternoon upstate against SUNY New Paltz. It was a pitchers duel for the majority of the action, but it was the Hawks who walked away with a 3-2 victory after a late game triple to drive home three runs. The Dolphins dropped to 11-17 in their 2024 campaign after Wednesday's result.

Junior Aidan Cardenas got the call to start on Tuesday and picked up where he left off during his appearance against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday. The southpaw tossed six scoreless innings against New Paltz, allowing just four hits and seven total base runners while striking out four.

The offense was scarce in the early goings, with sophomore Drew Knight recording the first hit of the game for UMSV in the top half of the second. Both Knight and Eric Zimmermann walked in the top of the fourth and were standing on second and third with two outs, but the offense couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. They did so, however, in the six. Junior Dom Porto once again showcased his speed as he hit an infield single before stealing second. Outfielder Joshua McCormick drove home Porto to give the Dolphins the lead. An error by the Hawks off the bat of senior Joey DiNorcia gave UMSV a two run edge in the top half of the eighth.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, New Paltz reached base by two singles and a hit by pitch, with all the runners scoring thanks to a triple. The Dolphins would go down in order in the ninth to close out the contest.

The stretch of action rolls into Wednesday when the Dolphins once again hit the road, this time to Vassar College.
