Poughkeepsie, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team returned to the road for the second time in 24 hours and were looking to return to the win column in a non-conference showdown with Vassar College. The Dolphins did just that, as they went on to score 10 runs, with the final score coming in the top half of the ninth inning, to top the Brewers by the score of 10-9. The victory for UMSV gives the program 12 through 29 games thus far.
Vassar didn't take long to jump out to an early lead. The Brewers scored three first inning runs and added a fourth in the second to give the home team a comfortable cushion. The Dolphins, however, remained level-headed and began to chip away in the top half of the third.
UMSV would plate a run thanks to a Vassar error when freshman infielder
Andrew Farina reached on a mishap by the Brewers first baseman, which would see junior
Jason Albert cross the plate.
Eric Zimmermann continued his strong 2024 campaign later in the inning, as his double drove home Farina to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Head coach John Torres would see productive at-bats from his lineup, as
Drew Knight's sacrifice fly would cut the Brewers lead to one - and just one inning later, Zimmermann would knot the game up at four with a ground out.
Vassar would regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but it wouldn't last long. The Dolphins would take the lead for the first time of the day in the top half of the sixth, Albert and Farina both picking up RBI.
Once again trailing by three runs into UMSV's final time up, the offense turned up their efforts in a major way. The team would rally to score four runs, with standout sophomore
Will Granata kicking things off with a sacrifice fly. Knight would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home
Johnny Brucato, and Albert would cap off his fantastic game with two RBI single up the middle to give the Dolphins the lead for good. Albert would record three hits, three RBI, two runs scored and one walk in four at-bats while Farina and Granata would add two hits apiece.
Graduate student
Joe Decandia received the start and allowed three earned runs with a pair of strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Sophomore
Jake Bland continued to shine in his second season with the program, allowing no runs on just one hit with two strikeouts over the final two innings of play to secure the win.
The Dolphins will look to keep the momentum in their favor this coming weekend, starting with a home double header against St. Joseph's University Brooklyn on Saturday.
