New York - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team had a jam packed weekend of Skyline Conference action. Over the course of three days, the Dolphins would challenge Purchase College, Mount Saint Mary College and Manhattanville University in six games, with a great chance to climb the standings as the conference tournament nears. After splitting the double header with the Panthers on Friday, the Dolphins were swept by the Knights and Valiants on Saturday and Sunday, bringing their conference record to 2-8 through 10 games.
Savannah Autobee got the call in game one against Purchase, and outside of one inning, continued her strong 2024 campaign. The sophomore allowed just one earned run (five total) while striking out seven in a complete game effort. The Panthers would plate five runs in the third inning, with UMSV doing their best to chip away. Junior outfielder
Sierra Romero starred for the Dolphins offensively, as the third-year standout tripled home teammate
Simone Caruso in the third and followed that up with a two RBI double in the fifth. Sophomore
Sabrina Colon would drive home Romero with an RBI single just one batter later, but the comeback attempt fell short.
Game two, however, was a different story - and it was all thanks to freshman hurler
Emily Cardenas. The Hawthorne, California native went the distance for head coach
Kevin Carbon, allowing just two runs (none earned) while scattering five hits to go along with seven strikeouts in seven innings, resulting in the best performance of her young career. The Dolphins offense, too, excelled, as the team jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first while scoring in four of the six innings of action. Sophomore infielder
Mila Gutierrez had a team-best two RBI, including a double that drove home
Emma Capozucca in the fourth inning.
While the Dolphins didn't continue their success across the weekend, there was individual success that can translate into the next set of games.
Aaliyah Dejesus went 4-for-6 in the two games against the Knights while driving home a pair of runs in each game.
Nichole Reyes added two hits of her own while both Caruso and freshman
Paige Goerman each collected RBI. Dejesus picked up another hit in the first game against Manhattanville while Romero collected three walks across Sunday's contests.
The Dolphins will use the weekend to regroup before looking to get back in the win column against Sarah Lawrence this coming Saturday.
