Bronx, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team capped off their weekend in grand fashion when that went on to sweep Maritime College - previously undefeated against Skyline Conference competition - giving the team a 3-1 record between Saturday and Sunday. The Dolphins offense was the driving force behind both victories, a unit that is sure to pose problems to opposing pitching staffs as the conference tournament nears. UMSV is now 6-4 in conference play, as well as 10-13 overall.
The Privateers looked like the undefeated team that they were entering play on Sunday, as they jumped out to an early two run lead before the Dolphins came to bat. But when they did, they responded.
Graduate student
Eric Zimmermann, who broke the school's all time hits record just 24 hours prior, doubled in his first at bat to drive home
Johnny Brucato to cut Maritime's lead in half. Zimmermann would score on a balk to bring the score back even after one inning.
The offense would continue to excel, as they would score at least one run in the next four innings. Catcher
Jason Albert would double home
Drew Knight to give UMSV a 3-2 lead, which would be followed up by a two-run home run by transfer Steven Marinez to extend his team's lead to three. Albert would hit a solo home run the the fourth, while Knight would advance runners due to an error by Maritime. The Privateers would tie things up in the top of the seventh due to a grand slam and a solo home run, but sophomore
Will Granata would rise to the challenge and walk the Privateers off in the bottom half of the seventh, good for his fifth home run of the week.
The offensive success would roll into game two. The Dolphins exploded for nine first inning runs, with Zimmermann, Brucato, Knight, Marinez,
Dom Porto and
Peter Pannullo each driving home runs. Maritime would chip away, as they would score in the third, fourth and fifth innings, making it a 9-7 ballgame. The Dolphins would answer, as Brucato and Marinez would each belt home runs in the fifth and sixth innings, while Pannullo would do so in the eighth. Maritime would get as close as three runs, but sophomore hurler
Jake Bland was able to shut the door in the bottom of the ninth.
Junior
Aidan Cardenas impressed in his game two start, as he struck out five in just three innings. Graduate student
Joe Decandia would come in and strike out the side in relief. Senior
Ivan Navarro would also pick up five strikeouts in just 2.1 innings.
The Dolphins continue the action on Tuesday night on the road against Stevens Tech.
