Comeback Attempt Falls Short As Dolphins Fall To Stevens

Hoboken, NJ - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team looked to capitalize on their weekend success when they returned to non-conference action on Tuesday night in a road matchup against the Stevens Institute of Technology. While the team's bats woke up late, it ended up being too late, as the Ducks walked away with an 15-8 victory over the Dolphins. The final result put UMSV's overall record to 10-14 through 24 games this season.

It was all Stevens in the early portions of the contest. The Ducks jumped out to an 8-0 lead after just two innings, giving the team enough cushion to secure a win. But it was at that point where fortunes started to turn for the Dolphins, even if it was just for one inning. Starting shortstop Johnny Brucato put the Dolphins on the board in the top of the third inning thanks to a sacrifice fly, cutting the Ducks' lead to seven.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, Stevens would respond in a major way, as they would plate seven additional runs in the bottom half of the seventh.

At that point, the UMSV offense came alive. After sophomore Stephen Marinez reached base in the, outfielder Joshua McCormick singled up the middle to drive home the first baseman. Drew Knight followed suit, as his single to left field brought home McCormick to further cut into the deficit. Knight would score on a wild pitch, and Eric Zimmermann would then collect an RBI single of his own, making it 15-5 ballgame in the seventh. Both Marinez and Knight would combine to drive home three additional runs for the Dolphins, but the team didn't have enough to mount the large comeback, resulting in the loss.

Marinez, McCormick, Knight and junior Dom Porto would lead the way with two hits apiece. Freshman Tyler Kropp received the start and allowed eight runs on eight hits along with five punch outs in 4.1 innings. Senior Gio Zuena impressed as he threw three scoreless innings to close out the contest.

The Dolphins will continue their stretch of non-conference action on Thursday when they hit the road once again to challenge Drew University.
