Patchogue, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's women's lacrosse team looked to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon in a road matchup against St. Joseph's University Long Island. The Skyline Conference showdown didn't go in the Dolphins favor, as they fell to the Golden Eagles 13-8 despite going step-for-step with the opposition over the first half of action.
UMSV is now 4-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
It was an even affair over the first 30 minutes of action, with the Dolphins controlling the pace early on. The offense got off to an impressive start against a Golden Eagles team with just one conference loss thus far, as both
Macey Forg and Alyssa La Torre scored within the first two minutes of action to give their team a two goal advantage. After a St. Joe's goal, the Dolphins would get on the board once more, this time with a little bit of luck, as a skirmish in front of the net led to the ball finding its way past the Golden Eagles goalkeeper.
The home team would then find its groove, as they would rattle off five straight goals to close out the first quarter leading 6-3. Forg would once again opening the scoring for her team in the second quarter with her second of the day, which was followed by a score from
Ella Meberg off a pass from
Alicia Rodriguez, making it a 6-5 contest. Both the Golden Eagles and Rodriguez would finish the half with scores, with one goal being the difference at the break.
The Dolphins offense struggled to generate chances against St. Joe's over the course of the second half, with UMSV scoring just two goals the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, would score six more goals of their own, resulting in the win.
Forg led the way in goals with four while Rodriguez added a score and a pair of assists, good for three points, while also leading the way with three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper
Makenna Reekie not only made 13 saves but also had a team-best seven ground balls.
UMSV's road stretch rolls into this week, as the Dolphins travel to nearby Maritime College to challenge the Privateers on Wednesday.
