Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's women's lacrosse team looked to continue their winning ways against the Skyline Conference on Wednesday evening when they welcomed the United States Merchant Marine Academy to Riverdale. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the Mariners kept their undefeated Skyline record in tact, as they walked away with a 14-7 victory on Marillac Field.
The Dolphins are now 4-6 overall with a 2-2 record in conference competition.
UMSV was ready for the challenge against one of the premiere teams in the conference. The Dolphins went toe-to-toe with the Mariners early on, including scoring the first point of the evening, courtesy of sophomore
Ella Meberg, who converted her 17th goal of the year. Both sides would trade goals for the remainder of the first quarter, with senior Alyssa La Torre scoring the next two goals for the Dolphins, with junior
Alicia Rodriguez picking up assists on all three scores.
From the end of the first quarter into the second, however, the Mariners would take over. USMMA would close out the first scoring two straight goals before answered five more unanswered straight points to kick off the second, good enough to extend their lead by six points. Rodriguez and junior
Macey Forg would cut into USMMA's lead, but the Mariners would hold a five point advantage at the break.
The second half would be a defensive battle, but the Mariners would do enough to remain on top until the end of regulation. Sophomore goaltender Makenna Reeke did her best to keep the Dolphins in the game, as the Tyngsboro, Massachusetts native did her best to keep her team in the game. Reekie made 13 saves to go along with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, one of the best games of the season that she's had thus far. Rodriguez would once again fill up the stat sheet, recording three goals, four assists, seven points, seven draw controls, six ground balls and a caused turnover, with the first five categories being team-highs.
Brittany Boyle and
Angelina Cardone would combine for five ground balls and two caused turnovers of their own.
The Dolphins return to action this Saturday, when they'll travel to Patchogue to take on St. Joseph's University Long Island.
