Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's lacrosse team was riding a high into the weekend after kicking off the 2024 season winners of two in as many games to start the 2024 season. The Dolphins had plans on extending their early season winning streak to three, but SUNY New Paltz had other plans. Despite being evenly matched on the field, the Hawks ran up the score 17-4 on a rainy Marillac Field. The loss puts UMSV at 2-1 thus far.
After trailing early by two goals, graduate student
Savion Williams picked up where he left off on Wednesday, scoring the first goal for the Dolphins and his fifth goal of the week. It was then, however, when the Hawks separated themselves in a major way. New Paltz went on a six goal run to finish the first quarter and into next, which saw their lead reach seven goals.
Freshman midfielder
Donte Thornhill did his best to get his team back in it, as the Bay Shore, New York native scored the first goal of his career, with classmate
Chai Dunlap picking up the assist. The Hawks, meanwhile, went on to rattle off another five consecutive goals, cutting any chance of a Dolphins comeback.
Graduate
Mustapha Daffeh had a second straight performance that saw him easily win the faceoff, secure the ground ball and take it all the way to the house to put his team on the board for the third time. Junior
Ethan Fajardo took a strong shot near the top of the box, with Thornhill securing the helper, but it was too little, too late.
Thornhill paced the Dolphins with two points, while Daffeh impressed with a team-best nine ground balls while winning 12 of 19 faceoffs.
Jacob Cochran,
Adrian Guillermo and
Isaac Parsons would record two caused turnovers each while Dunlap and sophomore defenseman
Walker Moore each had one of their own. Mark Lulgjeraj made his third start in net and picked up 10 saves in the loss.
UMSV will get the week to practice and rebound against Rosemont a week from today.
