Dolphins Lose OT Heartbreaker To Conference Rival Knights

Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent opened Skyline Conference play on Wednesday afternoon, taking on Mount Saint Mary College on Marillac Field in the program's first step towards postseason contention. The Dolphins and Knights traded leads all game long, but it was Mount Saint Mary who walked away victorious by the score of 14-13 after scoring a goal with less than two minutes left in the game's overtime period. The loss puts UMSV at 2-5 overall through seven games, as well as 0-1 against the Skyline.

It was all Dolphins to kick off the game, and they were once again led by reigning Skyline Conference Player of the Year Alicia Rodriguez. The midfielder was all over the field over the first five minutes of action - she not only scored the first two goals of the game but also added two ground controls and a ground ball over that span.

UMSV's offense continued to roll, as transfer sophomore Ella Meberg converted her first shot of the game to make it 3-0 in favor of the Dolphins. The Knights would respond with a goal of their own at the 5:24 mark, but goals from Brittany Boyle and Alyssa LaTorre would give the team a 5-2 lead after one.

Mount Saint Mary's offense would come alive in the second period, as the visitors would score the first two to open the quarter and four of the six goals scored before halftime, bringing the score to 7-6 at the break. Despite the goal totals, transfer sophomore Makenna Reekie had a strong game in net, as she made four of her 10 saves across the first half hour of action.

UMSV would then battle from behind in the third, but would keep pace with the Knights. Rodriguez, Meberg and LaTorre would all score before the third quarter's conclusion. The aforementioned trio would continue their offensive outpouring, as the three would respond to Mount Saint Mary's goals in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The Dolphins would control the ball in the early portions of the extra time, but a man-up situation in favor of the Knights would be the deciding factor in the game.

Rodriguez once again led the team in nearly all major statistical categories, including goals (four), assists (two), points (six), shots on goal (11), draw controls (eight), ground balls (seven) and caused turnovers (five). LaTorre would add four goals of her own while Meberg recorded a hat trick. Freshmen Dayonna Thomas and Laziza Azimova had three draw controls each while Reekie finished the game with 10 saves.

The Dolphins will be right back at it on Tuesday in a road conference matchup against Manhattanville.
