New Rochelle, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team took the field for the first time since returning from Myrtle Beach, taking on local rival John Jay College in a non-conference double header in nearby New Rochelle. Both games were tightly contested matchups, but it was the Bloodhounds who got the better of the Dolphins, winning both games by the scores of 5-4. The losses put the Dolphins at 1-10 through 11 games in the 2024 campaign.
The Dolphins went down early in game one but mounted comebacks in the early going. After giving up a run in the bottom of the first inning, freshman
Emily Cardenas had a productive at-bat, where her groundout to the opposing pitcher was good enough to score classmate
Ireyshka Lebron to even the game at one. UMSV once again tied the game in the top of the third inning in similar fashion to the first run scored. This time it was
Kaitlin Cirillo who got the job done for head coach
Kevin Carbon, as the senior's ground ball resulted in an error which brought home sophomore
Nichole Reyes.
John Jay led by three runs in the top half of the sixth, but the Dolphins wouldn't go away silently. Lebron hit the first home run of her collegiate career with the inside-the-park shot driving home
Paige Goerman, but it wasn't enough to successfully come back to win.
Charlotte Kelly impressed despite the final result, as the senior recorded six strikeouts in as many innings.
The Dolphins got off to a hot start in game two, with
Aaliyah Dejesus singling home Reyes to give her team the advantage before John Jay could come up to bat. The Dolphins would hold the lead later into the action when Dejesus once again come through for UMSV, this time with a home run, capping off an impressive game that saw the Albuquerque, New Mexico native go 3-for-4 with three RBI. Dejesus and Reyes would drive home two more runs for the Dolphins, but it was the Bloodhounds who would walk away victorious after scoring three runs in the final inning of action.
Sophomore
Serena Duran received the nod for game two and allowed five earned runs and six hits in 6.1 innings of work.
The Dolphins will look to right the ship against Lehman College this coming Monday.
