Madison, NJ - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team fell to 3-6 on the season against Kean University of Saturday afternoon, just 24 hours after returning to the win column in a game against Lehman College. The Dolphins showed late life, scoring three runs in the ninth, but were too far behind to secure the comeback. The game will ultimately serve as preparation for Skyline Conference play, with a game against Yeshiva University taking place later this week.
The game started with Mount Saint Vincent taking an early lead in the first inning when Eric Zimmermann doubled to right center, driving in Will Granata. However, Kean quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs off a walk and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead.
Kean extended their lead in the 3rd inning with another run, capitalizing on a passed ball. They added to their lead in the 6th inning with a flurry of runs to make it a 9-1 game. UMSV tried to rally in the 9th inning, scoring three runs off singles from Zimmermann, Drew Knight and JT Jimenez. However, Kean's lead was too much to overcome, and they closed out the game with an 11-4 victory.
Transfer Alex Alvarez got the call from head coach John Torres and allowed four runs, four hits and four walks across the first two innings. Sophomore Jake Bland had another strong game with four strikeouts in three innings while junior Aidan Cardenas let one run cross the plate the final tine the Cougars came to bat.Â
Despite the loss, Mount Saint Vincent had some strong individual performances, including Eric Zimmermann who had 2 hits and 2 RBI.
The Dolphins will look to right the ship and kick off conference play against the Maccabees on Tuesday.Â
