Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's women's lacrosse team took Marillac Field for the third time in four games to open the 2024 season, this time taking on Marywood University in a non-conference matchup between the programs. The Dolphins continuously fought from behind all afternoon, but the team's comeback attempt fell by the wayside, as the Pacers departed campus and went back to Scranton, Pennsylvania winners by the score of 16-14. The Dolphins are now 1-3 through four games thus far into the 2024 campaign.
After starting the game in an early two goal hole, it was reigning Skyline Player of the Year
Alicia Rodriguez who got things going for the Dolphins. The Easton, Pennsylvania native scored her first of eight goals just five minutes into the action to cut Marywood's lead in half. The Pacers would score three more goals to close out the first quarter, but transfer sophomore
Ella Meberg would score one of her own to make it a 5-2 game. Rodriguez would go on to record a hat trick in the second quarter alone, but Marywood would have an answer each time, resulting in an 8-5 lead at the break.
The Dolphins, however, would turn up the action offensively in the third. UMSV would go on to score five third quarter goals, with Rodriguez, Meberg and junior
Macey Forg combining for the points total. The Dolphins would continue to climb back into the game, as Rodriguez would take things into her own hands and score twice within the final minute to make it a 16-14 game, but there wasn't enough time on the clock to complete the comeback.
Rodriguez had the strongest game of the young season, as she finished the contest with eight goals, three assists, 10 ground balls, six draw controls and three caused turnovers. Forg impressed with four goals of her own while Meberg finished with two. Sophomore
Arianna Morales took home a season-high two caused turnovers while also earning a pair of draw controls.
Makenna Reekie received her first start in net for UMSV and had 16 saves to go along with four ground balls.
The Dolphins are set to have another home contest, this time against Bryn Athen, this Saturday at 12 PM.
