Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent looked to return to the win column at home on Wednesday evening, facing off against the United States Merchant Marine Academy in a pivotal Skyline Conference matchup. The Dolphins did just that, coming from behind to defeat the Martiners by the sore of 71-66. The win improved UMSV's conference record to 7-6, putting the team in a prime position as playoffs near.
The Dolphins couldn't have started the game any hotter, and junior guard
Kevin Agyemang was the driving force behind the team's success. The transfer from Dracut, Massachusetts found tremendous success from beyond the arc, knocking down four straight threes in consecutive possessions to kick off the action. The Dolphins as a whole looked the part offensively, with
Gerard Novello,
Connor Wein and
Alex Chi each playing a part in UMSV containing a double digit lead.
The Mariners, however, didn't let the deficit deter them. USMMA went on 13-0 run from the 7:02 mark up until the final whisle of the half, good enough to give the visitors a 31-29 lead at the break.
The Dolphins offense would regain form to kick off the second half, as they would chip away at the Mariners lead. Wein would score seven of the team's next 13 points while chipping in a steal and offensive board, eventually tying the game at 42 points apiece. UMSV would once again respond to a USMMA bucket, as Agyemang converted his sixth three point attempt to put the Dolphins back on top.
The game would remain close, but the Dolphins stayed on top in the scoring column throughout. Agyemang, Wein,
DJ Tucker and
Adrian Rraci would all hit clutch attempts to secure the five point victory.
Agyemang had his most efficient game as a Dolphin, scoring 29 points, including going seven of nine from beyond the arc. Wein would add 14 points, six boards, three steals and two assists in the win. Rraci would also finish in double figures with 12 points of his own. Tucker stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds, four assists to go along with a pair of steals.
The Dolphins wrap up their home regular season schedule on Saturday in a contest against Sarah Lawrence College.
