Dolphins Top Maritime For First Skyline Win

Throgs Neck, NY - The first Skyline Conference win is in the books.

The University of Mount Saint Vincent's women's volleyball team took to the road on Tuesday evening and emerged victorious against Maritime College in a five set thriller by the scores of 18-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-15 and 15-13. The victory marked the first one against conference competition in the 2024 campaign.

"I'm really proud of the way we battled back. The loss in set three could have been a backbreaker considering we had the lead and gave it away. We came out focused and hungry in the fourth and did a great job to tie up the match and close it out in the fifth," stated head coach Joseph Chojnacki. "The offense looked really good because we got consistent passing and our setters could use all of their teammates. It was a true team effort."

The passes were indeed spread out early and often to the team's trio of hitters in Melanieann Broderick, Reilly Nichtern and JaKaia Lotz. All three Dolphins recorded double digit kills against the Privateers, with Broderick having a team-best 12 while Nichtern and Lotz had 11 apiece. The middles also had tremendous success in the center of the court, as sophomore Dominique Otranto and freshman Sophia Madalakis combined for 11 kills of their own while Otranto, Madalakis and Olivia Dutzer each had two solo blocks.

Senior Lydia Aryee was a mainstay at setter, taking home 23 helpers while freshman Paige Staley had 11 of her own. Nichtern paced the Dolphins with 13 digs while Carly Synder added three service aces to her 2024 season totals.

The Dolphins will look to keep the momentum in their favor heading into a home showdown with Purchase College.
