Dolphins Drop Five Set Thriller To Purchase

Riverdale, NY - The Dolphins gave it their best shot but couldn't make it two straight Skyline Conference wins.

The University of Mount Saint Vincent hosted Purchase College on Thursday evening on the heels of their first conference victory of the year against Maritime College. The Dolphins' effort was there as they took it to five sets against the Panthers, but it was Purchase who would emerge victorious in the fifth and final set (22-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-18, 15-17).

The result put the Dolphins at 1-6 in conference play.

UMSV stormed back from adversity on two different occasions, rebounding from losses in sets one and three by taking sets two and four to force extra play. In set two, it was Reilly Nichtern and Dominique Otranto who combined for kills to take the game from 17-17 to 21-17. Sophomore Carly Snyder would close the set out in impressive fashion, as she would record two service aces for points 24 and 25. Both sides would battle in set four, but it was the Dolphins who would take advantage of Purchases's errors while Otranto would pick up yet another kill for the team's 24th point.

Melanieann Broderick would lead the way for the Dolphins in both kills (13) and aces (four) in yet another strong game for the fifth-year hitter. Freshman Paige Staley stepped up in the setter role and impressed with a game-best 26 assists while Nichtern had 17 digs. Otranto also had a strong night in front of the net with four total blocks.

The Dolphins now set their sights on this weekend when they take on New York University and Stockton University in a tri-match.
