Purchase, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon, emerging victorious in a pivotal Gold Division matchup against Purchase 80-73. The Dolphins rebounded nicely after a tough first half, with their defense being the catalyst behind the victory. The win proved UMSV's conference record to 5-3, placing them firmly in second place in their division, only behind Yeshiva University.
Head coach
James Mooney saw contributions from all over his roster. Lead guard
Joshua Cabezudo was all over the court offensively, scoring 21 points after making his way to the free throw line an impressive 14 times. The senior, who also went five-of-nine from the floor, also grabbed nine rebounds and four steals.Â
Freshmen starters
Connor Wein and
Alex Chi added a scoring punch of their own. Wein, a former Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week, had 14 points and seven boards of his own, while Chi scored a career-high 14 points with a 71% field goal percentage. Senior
DJ Tucker impressed in the passing game with a team-best six assists while
Kevin Agyemang converted two three balls while grabbing seven boards of his own.Â
After a back and forth affair over the first 20 minutes of action, UMSV trailed by as many as eight points to kick off the second half. The first-year duo started the scoring surge for the Dolphins, as both Wein and Chi scored three straight free throws before a Cabezudo and-one layup made it a one possession game. Chi's three straight points starting at the 15:41 mark would give the Dolphins their first lead of the half, and they wouldn't look back from there. UMSV would see multiple players extend the lead, as Cabezudo, Wein, Chi, Tucker, Agyemang and
Jalen Lewis would all score to keep their lead for good.Â
Top ranked Farmingdale State College comes to Riverdale on Wednesday, as the Dolphins look to remain firmly in the playoff hunt.Â
